The mission of the International Association for
Organ Donation is to educate the public on the importance of and
need for organ, tissue, bone marrow, and blood donations. Dynamic
educational presentations are given throughout the year to various
groups in southeast Michigan, including high school and college
students, medical professionals, police officers and the area’s
diverse religious community.
Each of the IAOD programming staff is educated with background
information and statistics on organ and tissue transplants, the
vital need for donations, and how to become a donor. Their education
on the issue helps the staff better communicate to the public at
large the seriousness of organ donation within our community. The
ultimate goals of our educational efforts are to raise awareness,
and encourage individuals to become registered organ donors.

The IAOD recognizes that ethnic minorities have a higher risk of
certain diseases that often necessitate organ transplantation;
therefore, the organization is especially interested in educating a
diverse audience. In the past, the IAOD has served as a
clearinghouse for information on organ, tissue, and marrow donation
to countries all over the world. Information has been distributed to
individuals and organizations in Africa, Spain, Germany, Lebanon,
and Qatar. The IAOD is working to expand worldwide by 2007.
The organization constantly attempts to reach all ethnic communities
in our educational efforts, and have thus far been successful in
raising awareness specifically within the Arab-American/Chaldean
population in Southeast Michigan. The IAOD has translated the
Michigan Gift of Life Donor Registry forms and key educational
brochures into Arabic, and have distributed these materials to local
mosques, churches and businesses throughout Southeast Michigan.
The IAOD has also produced educational materials in both English and
Spanish for children in Grades 1-12.
Successful partnerships have also been built within organizations
such as the UAW, Ford, General Motors, Daimler-Chrysler, University
of Michigan, Davenport University, Detroit Medical Center, Oakwood
Hospital and Henry Ford Health System to educate the community on
the significance of organ, tissue, and bone marrow donations.
If you are interested in having the IAOD visit your company,
organization or church and present materials on this life-saving
topic, please send an e-mail to
